Every organization has three built-in agents, ready to use without any setup. Pass their id as agent_id. Chat and Hive do the work. Planner only prepares it: it never searches, reads your files, or runs anything.

Chat and Hive

Chat and Hive have the same tools and the same default capabilities. Only the model differs. Cominty picks the models of each agent, and may change them.

Default capabilities

The built-in agents have no capabilities saved. Every capability is always, with no filter. Nothing is on_request by default. To change a default for one thread, pass that capability in thread_capabilities. For example, to search the web only on the messages that ask for it:
See Override an agent for one thread for the rules, and Memory to give a thread a namespace.

Always on, outside capabilities

Some features are not capabilities. You cannot turn them off.
  • A sandbox. Each thread gets a Linux environment. The agent can run code there, read the files you attach with file_ids, and create files. The files it shares with you come back in the reply’s files.
  • Clarifying questions. When a request is unclear, the agent can end its turn with questions instead of an answer. See Answer the agent’s questions.
  • Sub-agents. The agent can hand a task to a general-purpose sub-agent. Each integration also runs as a sub-agent. See Sub-agents have their own step counter.

Planner

Planner is a separate agent with one job: it turns your request into a detailed plan for another agent. It never does the task itself.

What it does

  1. It asks clarifying questions when the request is unclear.
  2. It writes the plan in Markdown, in your language: the goal, a step-by-step execution plan, and how to check the result. The plan is self-contained, so another agent can run it without this conversation.
  3. It edits the plan when you send feedback in the same thread.
The plan is written for an agent that has web search, document search, memory, and a sandbox, such as Hive.

What it does not have

  • No tools besides questions and the plan. No web search, no document search, no integrations, no skills, no image, video, or music generation, and no sandbox. It cannot check a fact or open a document.
  • No files. The API accepts file_ids, but Planner never receives them. Put what matters from the file in your message.
  • Capabilities change nothing. thread_capabilities and message_scope are accepted and checked, but Planner ignores them. Memory is the one exception: with a namespace, Planner can read and write memory files.

Get the plan

The plan is not the reply text. The reply text is Planner’s message to you. The plan is in structured_output["canvas"] on the reply. canvas is None on a reply where Planner did not write or change the plan, for example when it only asked questions. Keep the last plan you received.
Over HTTP, the plan is in structured_output.canvas on the assistant message returned by GET /chat/{thread_id}. While you stream, it is in data.metadata.canvas of the result event.

Run the plan

Planner does not run the plan. Start a new thread with Chat or Hive, and send the plan as the message.
On the platform, the plan opens in a side panel. Its Chat and Hive buttons open a new thread with the plan in the message box.

Your own agents

The agents you create on the Agents page of platform.cominty.ai run like Hive, with the same tools and sandbox. They add what you set on the agent:
  • Capabilities. An agent with none saved has every capability always, like Chat and Hive.
  • Instructions. They are added to the agent’s system prompt.
  • Models. If you pick none, the agent uses Hive’s.
